Haris Ahmed lives in Chicago, where his management consulting firm, Pragmatium Consulting, Inc., is based. He is passionate about helping leaders of organizations; coaching and guiding them so they can be more effective in their role in the company. He believes that an entrepreneur should possess strong leadership skills in order to direct the team towards the fulfillment of the business’ goals, and ultimately achieve success.

A business with an effective leader has better chances of not only surviving, but more importantly, of thriving and growing, compared to one that is run by a leaderless team. In any type of business, there are core components that need to be in place for it to succeed; and for the sake of simplicity, these can be generalized into two categories: its people and operations or processes. For these components to come together cohesively, an effective leader should be at the forefront.

First, let’s take a look at the qualities of a successful entrepreneur:

Anyone planning to put up a new business should be fearless. Treading on unknown territory is a risky undertaking and unless you have the guts to walk it fearlessly, you might not survive the journey. So the number one trait of a successful entrepreneur is being fearless.

The second and third traits that we should look into are drive and discipline. An entrepreneur should have the drive and discipline to stay focused on their goals and work to overcome any obstacles along the way.

Last but certainly not the least are communication skills and people skills. These skills are what will assist you in your day-to-day interaction with your team. Effective communication will help you properly convey the company’s mission and vision, while your people skills are what will help you establish good relationships with everyone within your organization.

In turn, all of these traits, when applied to your leadership style, will enable you to become an effective leader. With your strong entrepreneurial skills/traits and effective leadership, you lay down the path of success for your business.

To put it another way, the entrepreneurial skills and traits that you possess will help you:

  • Motivate each member of your organization to work effectively and efficiently
  • Receive inputs with an open mind
  • Encourage creativity
  • Develop effective techniques to encourage productivity
  • Build strong relationships within your organization, and partnerships with external resources for your profit goals
  • Build a good reputation for your organization and company
  • Earn the loyalty of the members of your organization

Ultimately, you will also gain the respect of your peers and competitors, and make a good name for yourself in your industry.

When every member of your organization feels motivated and inspired, more by your actions than your words, working towards the fulfillment of your goals will be a lot easier.

Leadership in business always starts with the entrepreneur. How you lead will determine the direction of your organization, and ultimately, its success or failure.
